Say it early, and say it clearly
If repatriation is the family’s wish, that intent needs to reach local contacts, whoever is present at the death, hospital staff, hotel management, or a tour operator, immediately and unambiguously. A legal system split between two traditions
Mauritania runs French civil law for most formal matters alongside Islamic personal status law under the Maliki school. Death registration goes through the état civil, with the attending physician certifying cause of death and the civil registrar issuing the certificate. Documentation is primarily in Arabic, with French also used in formal administrative settings, and both need certified English translation before the case reaches the UK.
No Embassy in Nouakchott

The Saharan interior is out of reach
FCDO advises against all travel to Mauritania’s Saharan interior, where the risk of kidnap by Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and affiliated groups is real. Body recovery from these areas isn’t achievable by standard means. Cases in Nouakchott and the accessible coastal and southern areas don’t carry this constraint.
