Viti Levu against everywhere else
Viti Levu is the main island, home to both Nadi International Airport and the capital Suva. A death anywhere on Viti Levu, including the Coral Coast, moves through the standard documentation chain cleanly. Vanua Levu, the second largest island, needs a domestic flight transfer to Viti Levu first, typically one to two days.
The real complexity sits further out. The Yasawa and Mamanuca Islands, and especially the scattered atolls of the Lau Group in eastern Fiji, have infrequent inter-island boat services. A death there can mean two to three days just to reach Viti Levu, before any formal process starts.
Where the forensic work happens
Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva carries out post-mortems for unnatural deaths; Lautoka Hospital covers western Viti Levu. Anything from Vanua Levu or the outer islands transfers to CWMH Suva. The documentation chain runs: a death certificate from the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages, police closure of the case for any unnatural death, the post-mortem report itself, the Ministry of Health export permit, and embalming to IATA standards.
Diving deaths need particular care
Fiji is a world-class diving destination, and diving fatalities are among the most common causes of British visitor death here. Where decompression illness is suspected, investigators may review dive logs, equipment condition, and surface interval records before a cause of death is confirmed. This can add 5 to 10 days. If a case involves diving, tell the British High Commission Suva and your repatriation provider immediately so this review can start without delay.
Cremation as an alternative
Cremation is available in Suva, and for some families, bringing ashes home rather than the body is the simpler and faster option once the forensic and legal steps are complete.
Getting home
Fiji Airways connects Nadi International Airport with Sydney, Melbourne, and Auckland; every repatriation routes through one of these before continuing to London with Qantas, Air New Zealand, or a partner carrier.
